The Bhatis are basically Chandravanshi Rajputs and they claim their inheritance from Lord Krishna.

The Bhatis ruled at and around the present day Ghazni and its nearby areas in Afghanistan. Balband Bhati, the 19th King of Lahore in 279 AD is believed to be the first Bhati King. His successors were called as Bhatis. His son Bhupat constructed ‘Bhatner’ (Present day Hanumangarh Fort). In the same series the following Forts were constructed by Bhatis at Muman Vahan (519 AD) Maroth (599 AD) Kehror (731 AD), Tannot (770 AD) Ludrva (853 AD), Pugal (857 AD) and Jaisalmer (1150 AD).

In fact the later rulers kept on making altercations in these forts including at Pugal also in the name of repair/renovations/refurbishing in the forthcoming years; that is why the fort kept imbibing very sculpture characteristics of Delhi sultanate as well as mughal period.

The Bhatis took over Pugal from 1380 AD onwards. Earlier Pawars were ruling at that place. Rao Ranakdev was the first Bhati King [Son of Rawal Poonpal who had migrated from Jaisalmer to Pugal]. Pugal regained its progress under the King Kelan from 1414 AD onwards till he remained the ruler. Rao Kelan is supposed to have conquered 32,000 Sq. mile area under the then Pugal state.

Bhatis acted as protectors for India from the attacks made from far North:- In the time of Vijaya Rao lancha (1122 AD), a title was given to the Bhatis as ‘Bhatt kiwad Bhati’. This title was given to the famous Bhati King of Vijaya Rao Lancha of Ludruva and this title was probably given to him to protect India from the attacks of Mohammad Gouri and the title was given to him by the then ruler of the present day Bhatner areas who were ruling at an around Pugal.

One interesting aspect of the Pugal history is that Pugal always believed in maintaining communal harmony; so much so that the siblings of the Kings from time to time in the last 1500 years kept embracing Muslim religion; for example son of Rao Ranakdev, Tannu got converted as Muslim as his successors were called Mumani Hamirot and Abo-haria Bhati Muslims. Even Rao Kelan married the daughter called Javeda who was daughter of a Pathan King Jam Ismail and he got settled his sons at Bhatner [present day Hanumangarh] ; later their successors got converted to Muslim religion and were called ‘Bhatti’ Muslims. Even the successors of King Balband Bhati of Ghazni got converted to Muslim religion. The grandson Chakita of King Balband married to the daughter of King of Bokhara. Later the successors of Chakita performed their marriages into the families of Balaks, Usbeks, etc. One of the sons of Chakita was Shahubuddin Mohammed Gauri who attacked India in 1175 AD and later defeated Prithviraj Chauhan in 1192 AD and become King of Delhi. Thus Mohammed Gauri was in a way was a successor of a Bhati King.
